How to measure for curtains

Measure two things with a steel tape: the track width, and the drop from the top of the track to the floor. Enter exactly what you measure. We add the fullness, overlap and hem, and check your sizes against a photo of the window before we cut.

1. Track width

Measure the full length of the track, end to end. No track yet? Measure the window frame and add 150–200 mm each side so the curtains stack clear of the glass. For ceiling tracks, measure where the track will run.

2. Drop

Measure from the top of the track to the floor at the left, middle and right. Use the shortest. Choose your hem on the product page: 10 mm off the floor, touching, or puddled.

3. Photo

Take a photo of the window with the tape across it and send it with your order. We check every order before cutting.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring the glass instead of the track.
  • Taking off your own allowances. We already do that.
  • Measuring the drop once in the middle on an uneven floor.

Prices include GST and were checked on 27 October 2026. They come from the same calculator as the product pages.

Common questions

Do I measure the window or the track?

The track. If there is no track yet, measure the window and add 150–200 mm each side.

Should I take anything off my measurements?

No. Enter exactly what you measure. We work out the fullness, overlap, returns and hem.

What if my floor is not level?

Measure the drop at the left, middle and right and give us the shortest.

Metal or cloth tape?

Use a steel tape. Cloth tapes stretch.
